A tightly-contested affair between the Portage Terriers and Winkler Flyers ended in a 3-2 shootout loss for Portage.
Koy Funk’s 13th of the season would come on the powerplay, as a long shot from Nolan Nenow would get a nice tip over the glove hand of Flyers netminder Liam Ernst to get Portage up 1-0.
Winkler would add a goal in the second period to make it a 1-1 game, as Portage found themselves hemmed in their own end following a penalty kill. That would last until the end of the second period.
One goal each in the third would send the game to overtime, where the Terriers carried the play. Both goalies made a few saves to lead the game to a shootout.
Winkler would score 2 in the shootout, while Portage could only manage one, leading to their first loss in extra time this season.
Terrier Captain Parker Scherr says that despite the loss, the team feels pretty good about their effort.
“I honestly think, since the break, we’ve been playing super solid as a team. We showed a lot of that tonight. Obviously, a few mistakes that led to their goals but I really think if we keep doing what we’re doing, we’ll be fine.”
Portage will be back on the ice Wednesday for their first trip to Steinbach this season. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m.
