The Portage Terriers looked strong from start to finish on Sunday night in a 6-2 win against the Winnipeg Freeze.
It was a busy night for Winnipeg goalie Ben Chornomydz; in the opening period the Terriers outshot the Winnipeg Freeze 19-6. Decker Mujcin scored his team leading 17th of the season late in the first period to open the scoring.
The Freeze showed some signs of life early in the second period. A turnover at centre ice, led to a partial break for Parker Rolston and he snapped it low glove side past Terrier goalie Ryan Velan. The tied game would be short lived as defenceman Wyatt Dreger took the game into his own hands one minute later. He took the puck up ice and scored upstairs on the rush to make it 2-1 Portage. The Dogs then scored three more goals to close out the second. Caleb Lepitre sniped a shot off a faceoff, Nolan Nenow got a shot through traffic, and Dawson Madden scored on the power play. Portage outshot the Freeze 38-11 through two periods.
With the game out of reach, Portage added another in the third period from Tristan Gravenor. Winnipeg would get a late goal on the power play, but it would be too little too late.
Some of the Terriers will now get a bit of a break until next Friday when they host the Steinbach Pistons. For eight Terriers (See list here) they will be competing in the MJ/SJ Showcase this week in Winnipeg.
